Mrs. Edith Lou Cooey Walpole

July 6, 1938 — January 9, 2021

Mrs. Edith Lou Cooey Walpole, 82 of Iola, passed away Saturday, January 9th at her home. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Sunday, January 17th at Carlos Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Joe Saffle will officiate. Interment will be in the Patton Cemetery in Patton, Texas on Sunday, January 24th at 1:00pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.

Edith Lou Cooey was born on July 6, 1938 in Hubbard, Texas to Johnny and Jessie (McPherson) Cooey. She was one of 14 children. She married Jesse Lee Walpole on October 10, 1958 and together they raised five children. Raised during the depression, Edith was no stranger to hard work and held a variety of jobs throughout the years to help her husband support their family – her favorite of which was working at the school cafeteria. Edith loved children, and she was always ready to greet everyone with a smile and a helping hand. She enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her flower gardens. A good book always kept her entertained, but her favorite book throughout the ages was the Holy Bible. She was always up for a road trip or vacation and accompanied her daughter Kathy on several trips, most notably a three week trip to London in 2006. Her family was everything to her, and having all of her children and their ever growing families together under her roof at holidays was so important to her that her husband built a 40x40 kitchen and dining room so that Edith could cook and have everyone together for gatherings around the table. She spent numerous hours crafting, particularly crochet. She was known for always adorning a fedora hat, complete with hat pin, and had quite the collection of various hats.

Edith is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jesse Lee Walpole; sons and daughters-in-law John and Sherrie Walpole, Brian and Donna Walpole and Robert Walpole; daughter Kathy Walpole Kirkpatrick; sisters Linda Weeks and Lorretta Cooey; grandchildren Teddy Kirkpatrick, Katrina Millard, Kristina Henson, Chelsea Brown, Marion Klutts, Josie Keep, Bonnie Ballard, Marshall Walpole, Ashley Walpole, Amber Walpole, Jessica Walpole, Chasity Clark, Mikel Clark and Haydyn Walpole; 20 great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; five sisters; daughter Beatrice Kay and son Jesse Lynn.
