Mr. William "Billy" Doyle Carter

November 22, 1934 — February 26, 2021

William Doyle “Billy” Carter, 86 of Iola, passed away Friday, February 26th at his home. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 2nd at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Rev. Sewell Stewart will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Billy was born in Grimes County on November 22, 1934 to Doyle and Willie Mae (O’Bannon) Carter. He married Peggy Verlene Mahana in Iola on May 29, 1954. Together they had three sons and a daughter. Billy Carter was known as a man of many talents. While his main occupation was as a skillful brick mason/home builder, he enjoyed many creative hobbies. Billy was a gifted artist and left behind many original oil paintings of beautiful nature scenes.
Billy also had a passion for wood working. He spent countless hours in his wood shed working on his creations. Billy worked tirelessly on creating rocking chairs and fiddles. Many of his rocking chairs have been shared with his friends throughout the town of Iola and at last count he had a collection of 54 fiddles made from his own hands.
Billy’s favorite hobby after his retirement was following and supporting his grandkids. Billy traveled for years throughout many states to countless baseball parks, and race tracks. He also very much enjoyed watching the local stock shows that his grandkids participated in.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peggy Carter; sons and daughter-in-law Toby Carter, Wayland and Leah Carter and Dean Carter; daughter and son-in-law Gina and Scotty Gressett; brother Frank Carter; grandchildren Christopher Gressett, Bradley Gressett, William Carter, Cain Carter and Carson Carter and great-grandchildren Ava and Olivia Gresett.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Carl and Clifford Carter.
