John Leroy Mohney

April 12, 1939 — January 21, 2026

Houston, Texas

Dr. John Leroy Mohney, D.O., a devoted physician whose life’s work was centered on helping others, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in his home in Houston, Texas. He was 86.

Born on April 12, 1939, in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, John was the son of William L. Mohney and Ethel Oppelt Mohney, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Claire Mohney Knowles.

From an early age, John demonstrated a deep sense of responsibility, compassion, and service—qualities that would define both his personal life and his long medical career. He served in the armed services before pursuing his education through the GI Bill, an opportunity he embraced with gratitude and purpose. In 1969, he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University.

Dr. Mohney dedicated his professional life to the practice of Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. A member of the American Osteopathic Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine, he devoted himself tirelessly to the care of thousands of patients through his private practice and his service to clinics throughout the Houston area. His patients knew him not only as a skilled and knowledgeable physician, but as someone who truly listened, cared deeply, and treated every individual with dignity and respect.

Helping others was not simply John’s profession—it was his calling. Whether through medicine, mentorship, or quiet acts of kindness, he spent his entire life focused on improving the lives of those around him. His devotion to his patients was matched only by his devotion to his children, whom he loved deeply and supported unconditionally.

Outside of medicine, John embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He cherished time spent on his farm in cattle country, loved ballroom dancing and line dancing, and enjoyed travel. Despite making his home in Texas, he remained deeply connected to his roots and regularly returned to western Pennsylvania to visit family. A strong believer in healthy living, he was very health-oriented, an avid walker, and remained physically active throughout his life.

Dr. Mohney is survived by his children: Mark W. Mohney (Maria Christina), Shawna Mohney Deeves, and John Jeffrey Mohney; his niece, Brenda Abbott; his nephew, and Danny Knowles. He is also survived by four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering commitment to helping others—a legacy that will continue to live on through his family, his patients, and the many lives he touched.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, to be announced. In honor of Dr. Mohney’s lifelong dedication to helping others, donations in his memory may be made to the HealthWell Foundation.
