Leonard Coleman

May 31, 2008 — January 1, 2001

Leonard O. Coleman, M.D. of Navasota passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 3 at the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota. Visitation will be held at Nobles Funeral Chapel on Tuesday June 2, 2008 with the family present from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.

Leonard was born in Navasota to Dr. Solon and Mabelle Outlar Coleman on December 12, 1927. He graduated from Navasota High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1945. After completing his service in World War II, Leonard graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1950 and Baylor University School of Medicine in 1954. He interned at St. Louis City Hospital in St Louis, Missouri and began his surgical training there. He was married to Pat Hardison of Dallas and had three children. In 1963, Leonard married Carole Johnson of Austin and together, they had three daughters. They were married nearly 45 years and made their home in Navasota.

As his father and grandfather before him, he became a physician and surgeon. After completing his medical training, Leonard joined his father and brother-in-law, W.S. Conkling, M.D., in their Navasota practice. Serving Navasota and its surrounding communities as a surgeon and "town doctor" was a great privilege to him. Many knew him simply as Dr. Leonard, L.O., or as Doc. When asked what he'd been up to, he'd often respond, "Saving lives and stamping out disease, how about you?" He loved the people of Navasota and Grimes County and was honored to treat generations of families. Despite being an accomplished surgeon, one of his greatest honors was to be the team doctor for the Rattler football team.

Community service was a way of life for Dr. Coleman. He served as a school board member, city council member and Chairman of the Grimes County Republican Party. He supported businesses in Navasota through the Kiwanis Club, the Industrial Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Coleman was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over four decades where he served as a deacon and elder. After retiring from his surgical practice, Dr. Coleman volunteered with Hospice Brazos Valley.

He is preceded in death by parents, Dr. and Mrs. S.D. Coleman, and sister and brother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. W.S. Conkling.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Carole Coleman of Navasota; sons: Hardison Coleman of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Doug Coleman of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia and Craig Nelson of Creede, Colorado, Chrissie and David Loftis of Rockwall, Texas, and Caren and Troy Elms and Connie and Clark Ealy of College Station; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in memory of Dr. Leonard Coleman to Grimes St. Joseph Hospital, Hospice Brazos Valley, and First Presbyterian Church of Navasota.
