Born to Jessie and Lilian Wehmeier Shimshack on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1957. Richard was the third of seven children. He graduated from Navasota High School in 1976, spent many years working in the oil industry before returning home to Grimes County. There, he worked as a carpenter and later ventured into farming.
